Tenby Golf Club welcomed Carmarthen Golf Club on Monday for the first round of the South Wales Seniors Classic Bowl competition.
The match had looked in doubt earlier in the day, with torrential rain falling during the morning. However, as so often happens at Tenby, the skies cleared in time and the match was able to go ahead.
Tony Andrews and Adrian Palmer led the way for Tenby and, after falling three down early on, produced some excellent golf to fight back and secure a 4&2 victory. The second match saw Allen Watts and Brian Jones make a strong start, moving into a two-hole lead. However, their Carmarthen opponents battled back well, taking advantage as the Tenby pair’s early momentum slipped away. A birdie on the 10th proved a turning point, before another birdie on the 14th sealed the match in style for Carmarthen.
With the contest tied, everything came down to the final match. Tenby need not have worried, as Ian Duke and Mike Disney were in fine form. The pair were four up at the turn and went on to close out a confident 4&3 win, securing Tenby’s place in the next round.
Thanks go to the catering staff for providing sandwiches at short notice, and to the greenkeeping team for their hard work in preparing the course and producing a great test of golf.
