COURSE OVERVIEW
TENBY’S CLASSIC LINKS COURSE BEGUILES VISITORS WITH ITS MELLOW UNDULATING GREENS AND AWESOME SEA VIEWS.
You’re always just a stone’s throw away from a breathtaking view of the ocean, and when you reach the highest point of the 17th hole, you can savour a sublime panorama of the coastal waters with the picturesque Caldey Island in the distance.
We take pride in our ability to maintain a continuous schedule of play, all 365 days of the year, thanks to our sandy terrain’s exceptional drainage and rainwater absorption capabilities. Our motto is simple:
“WHEN IT RAINS, IT DRAINS!”
This ensures that our course doesn’t transform into a swamp during inclement weather, making it readily accessible even for electric buggies.
Tenby’s golf course is different from neatly groomed park-like courses. When you start playing here, you need to consider the natural land and how it affects your game.
People often say that golf here feels very natural, with hilly fairways, sand dunes, and sometimes challenging bunkers and hidden shots. But don’t worry, it’s not a rough course; the putting greens are always in great shape, and the ball rolls smoothly and accurately.
IN FACT, THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR BOTH BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED GOLFERS.
The course’s layout naturally developed alongside the dunes and wild grasses that surround the greens. However, it was the influence of the innovative designer James Braid that helped shape the course into what it is today—a “classic links course.”
THE GREENS AND FAIRWAYS HERE ARE CONSISTENTLY FAST, BUT TENBY HAS ITS UNIQUE CHALLENGES.
You’ll need to play smart to avoid getting caught in the rough hazards.
While Tenby offers a highly rewarding golfing experience, many of the holes require a delicate touch when teeing off. As one observant golf journalist noted,
“…AT TENBY, A BIT OF RESTRAINT CAN GO A LONG WAY.”
Perhaps it was the course’s distinctive features that captivated the renowned Welsh Ryder Cup player, Dai Rees, whose fondness for Tenby led to the third hole being named after him.
Nestled within our expansive course lies a significant portion that has earned the prestigious…
TRIPLE SSSI STATUS
This means our golf course not only offers an exceptional golfing challenge but also showcases the incredible biodiversity and natural beauty of our surroundings. Our Triple SSSI area is a haven for diverse plant and animal species. As you navigate the fairways, you’ll be surrounded by thriving ecosystems and natural beauty. It’s a golfing experience that’s as much about the environment as it is about the game.
THERE’S ANOTHER ELEMENT TO CONSIDER HERE, AND THAT’S THE WIND.
Some golfers who come back to Tenby after playing on calmer courses in cities or suburbs often realise they’ve missed the exciting unpredictability of this links course.
While it might not blow as fiercely as it does on the Atlantic coast to the west, it can still be a significant factor, especially when you’re teeing off directly into it. However, you’ll find more protection from the elements as you progress beyond the early holes.
For those players who aren’t used to its unique challenges, Tenby might initially seem like a “tough” course….
BUT IN REALITY, IT JUST TAKES TIME TO GET TO KNOW THE LIE OF THE LAND, A BIT LIKE FAMILIARISING YOURSELF WITH THE DETAILED LANDSCAPE OF YOUR OWN BACKYARD!
