Tenby A team played their Quarter Final match at Creigiau GC on Wednesday 17th July. The opponents were Caerphilly GC.
Mick Seal and the injured Glenn Smith lead the way, and the old adage ‘ beware of the injured golfer ‘ rang true. Giving 6 shots looked a daunting task but steady play from both players allowed them to go 2 up early and they held that lead to the end.
Derek Cole and Ian Duke were next out and it was a titanic battle. Never much in it, Tenby were 1up on the 18th tee, but after losing that hole, where one of their opponents thinned the approach to 2 feet to share the spoils. Third out were Simon Sweet and Alan Sayers, who had problems on the greens eventually went down 2 and 1.
The drama didn’t end there, because the match was halved overall, the pairs who halved had to go down the 1st in sudden death play off. Both teams were on the green in 2. Derek Cole was first to putt 20 yards from the hole, and in front of a capacity crowd of 20 people, he canned the putt. Tension mounted as the 2 Caephiily lined up the putts one had to go in, to take the match to the 2nd extra hole. Unfortunately for them neither had Derek’s skill or calm demeanour, and Tenby went through to the Semi Final which will be played at The Grove GC on 7th August.
Well done to Mick and his team
