Over the weekend of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, Tenby Golf Club travelled to Swansea for their much-anticipated annual matches against Langland Bay and Pennard Golf Clubs. Glorious weather and beautifully prepared courses set the stage for two enjoyable days of golf.
Saturday – Langland Bay
The weekend began at Langland Bay, where Tenby got off to a strong start. Team captain Brian Jones and Austin Davies led from the front with a 2&1 victory, followed by a hard-fought half from Wyndham Collins and Chris Smith. Despite the promising start, Tenby struggled to maintain momentum. The only other pair to notch a win were Rob Hall and Ian Draisey, with the home side ultimately running out deserved 7½ – 2½ winners.
Players enjoyed a well-earned two-course meal and a few refreshing drinks after a hot and testing day on the links.
Sunday – Pennard
Sunday brought a reversal of fortune. Perhaps helped by the lack of an overnight stay and no detour to Wind Street, Tenby bounced back at Pennard with a solid performance.
The opening match saw Rob Morgan and Brian Jones defeat the Pennard captain, Dave, and his son Joe 3&1, making the most of their shots and adjusting quickly to the slick greens. Pennard responded strongly, taking matches 2 and 3. The tide turned again with back-to-back wins from Rob Willcox, Nick Allen, and Wyndham Collins in matches 4 and 5, before Pennard levelled things again in match 6.
Steve and Tom Watkins halved match 7, leaving it to the final pairs to decide the outcome. Mark Edwards & Peter Turton and Grant Watkins & Chris Doyle delivered two convincing wins to seal a 5½ – 4½ victory for Tenby.
The hosts at Pennard were gracious and generous, with their captain expressing eagerness for the return fixture in September.
Thanks go to all the Tenby players, especially those who travelled to Swansea on both days.
