Tenby GC, after victories in The Wales Golf Ping Championship and The Hamilton Cup, carried on their great season by defeating Ashburnham GC in their annual Matchplay fixture.
The match was in doubt due to a forecast of heavy rain, but as is often the case, the Pembrokeshire weather took a turn for the better, and conditions proved to be ideal for good scoring. This was proven in the first match out, when Alison Daniel and Martin Spurin produced a barrage of birdies to win 8&6! Their opponents were in awe, and Ashburnham Captain, Olwen Davies, was fulsome in her praise during the after match dinner, but mischievously questioned the work of the Tenby C&H Committee!!!!
Second team out, Heather Morgan and Chris Hughes, gave 8 shots to their opponents and, in a tight game, an outstanding greenside bunker shot on the 16th by Chris was enough to seal it for the Tenby pair.
The ever reliable Larges were out next, and once this pair take the lead, it’s almost impossible to peg them back. That proved to be the case once again. After going one up on the second hole, they cruised to a 3&2 victory.
Diana Dredge and Brian Jones kept the ball rolling with a 3&2 victory, and Brian pointed out to the rest of the team that in 16 holes of Greensomes, they did use his drive on one occasion!!!
Angela Gottwaltz and Roger Schooling finished their game early on the back nine to make it 5 wins, and with 2 matches remaining, could it be a whitewash?
Gill John and Ian Williams didn’t start well, going 2 down after 2, but it’s the finish that counts, and after some great golf, they won 5&3.
It was down to Trevayne Keohane and Club Vice Captain Wyndham Collins to make it a clean sweep, and they didn’t fail, but it wasn’t easy. They were 3 down after 4, but that Tenby fighting spirit came to the fore, and they won by a convincing 4&3.
The final score was 7-0 to Tenby GC, but it’s not the winning that counts, although it does help!
The match was played in great spirit, and everyone enjoyed the course and the excellent meal that followed. Ashburnham Captain Olwen was looking forward to the return fixture next year at her home course and thanked Tenby GC for a great day of golf and friendship.
