In one of the final events of the golfing calendar, the annual international match between the England and Wales School teams saw Tenby Golf Club members Nel Allen and Jemma Nand Lal proudly represent Wales. This marks a repeat of the 2023 pairing, where Nel teamed up with Kasumi Tran.
The morning session featured a challenging foursome format, where the Tenby duo faced a formidable English pairing of Scarlett Phillips and Zoe McLean-Tatten, the latter of whom has secured a golf scholarship to Louisiana State University in the USA. Despite their best efforts, Nel and Jemma were defeated 5/3.
In the afternoon’s individual matches, Nel returned to face her morning opponent, Scarlett, in what would be her final appearance for the Wales School team. Determined to make amends, Nel started strong with a 270-yard drive off the first tee, setting the tone for an early lead. Scarlett, however, leveled the match with an eagle putt on the 4th hole and took the lead on the par-three 7th after Nel found the bunker.
Undeterred, Nel responded with her best golf, playing the next five holes at one under par, which earned her a 3-up lead. An unlucky bounce on the 16th hole cut her lead to 2-up, but both players parred the 17th, securing Nel’s victory and adding a valuable point to the Welsh team.
