It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Tenby GC teams, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Eight pairs from the Tenby mixed team took to the fairways on Friday 1 May to face Cardigan GC. The match was a rearranged fixture after torrential rain had put paid to the original date in early April. The result was never really in doubt, with a strong Tenby side securing an impressive 7-1 victory. Diane Gough was unable to play due to injury, but her hard work in arranging the fixture was handsomely rewarded.
Thanks go to the catering team for looking after both teams on the day, and to the green staff for presenting the course in tip-top condition, something remarked upon by all who played.
Tenby GC men travelled to Langland Bay GC, Swansea, for the away leg of their annual fixture. Vice Captain Wyndham Collins began with 23 names for the trip, but injuries and withdrawals meant that, on the evening before the match, he was still one player short for the 10-pair contest. Thankfully, club stalwart John Gilman came to the rescue.
Club Captain Brian Jones and Mark Poole were first out against Langland Captain Steve Bond and Peter Williams. The match went to and fro and was all square on the 18th tee. Brian and Peter both found the green in two, and all players sportingly agreed to call it a halved match. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got for Tenby, with the next nine pairs suffering defeat. Many of the matches went to the final green, but local knowledge proved to be the deciding factor.
Wyndham was magnanimous in defeat and vowed a repeat of last year’s comeback, when Tenby won the trophy on home turf.
Thanks to all those who played and to Langland Bay GC for being excellent hosts, as always. Thanks also to Wyndham Collins for all his hard work in arranging the fixture.
