Tenby Golf Club teams enjoyed a superb week of results, completing a hat-trick of victories across three competitions.
Following wins against Creigiau GC in the Academia Matchplay and Pennard GC in the South Wales Seniors Classic, it was the turn of the Tenby mixed team, who faced Pontadawe GC at Carmarthen GC in the Wales Golf Ping Mixed competition.
Georgina Ormond and Ian Duke got Tenby off to the perfect start. Having been two down, they fought back strongly to win their match 2 and 1. Georgina, who came into the side as a late replacement, proved to be an excellent addition to the team, particularly on the greens.
In the second match, Angie Gottwaltz and Roger Schooling faced a tough challenge, giving six shots to their opponents. Despite their efforts, they were unable to match the Pontadawe pair and conceded defeat on the 14th.
That left the final match to decide the tie. Another late replacement, with several of the Tenby ladies away on a trip to Spain, saw Tenby mixed legend Heather Morgan partner Brian Jones.
Heather and Brian found themselves two down after four holes, with the six shots they were giving helping the Pontadawe pair maintain their advantage. However, the match began to turn on the 9th hole, with Tenby then winning three holes in succession. The highlight came on the 10th, where Heather produced a superb chip from a difficult position to set up an unlikely par and win the hole.
From that point on, there was never more than one hole in the match. Pontadawe won the 18th with a net birdie, having received a shot, to take the contest down the first extra hole.
With the whole tie resting on the play-off hole, Tenby produced three excellent shots to set up a par putt on the long uphill hole. Unfortunately for Pontadawe, a duffed third shot followed by an over-hit fourth meant Tenby were able to take the match and progress to the next round.
Thanks go to the Tenby team for making themselves available on a rainy and windy day, and to Carmarthen GC for hosting the match on a course that was in excellent condition.
