Tenby and Trefloyne Golf Clubs recently hosted the AJO Memorial on consecutive Saturdays.

Arthur Ormond MBE was the Managing Editor of the Tenby Observer, and the competition involving both clubs is held each year in his memory.

First leg – Tenby GC

The famous links were in excellent overall condition, although the weather proved extremely tough, with a very strong easterly gale and some rain. Nevertheless, the turnout was good in view of the circumstances.

Arthur’s grandson, Sam Ormond, led the field with an excellent 40pts. George Taylor followed closely with 39pts, while Neil Webb came in with 38pts.

In fact, given the conditions, the scoring was generally very good, with 32 competitors returning scores of at least 30pts.

Second leg – Trefloyne GC

The weather was much improved for the second leg, although a stiff breeze blew throughout the day.

The parkland course was very well presented, with the fairways, semi-rough, greens and bunkers all in good condition, although the main rough proved very penal.

No fewer than six men returned scores of 37pts: Mark Taylor, Ashley Griffiths, William Morgan, Lee Gilpin, Robin Lloyd and Harri Harries.

It was another day of excellent scoring, with 39 entrants handing in cards of at least 30pts.

Ladies section

At Tenby, the best ladies’ card was returned by Angela Large with 37pts.

At Trefloyne, the ladies produced the two best scores of the day, with Mary Price scoring 39pts and Heather Morgan close behind with 38pts.
