A huge thank you to everyone who played and helped to make Captain’s Day such an enjoyable occasion. I hope everyone who took part had a fantastic day.
We were blessed with glorious weather, and the course was in superb condition. A special thank you must go to Jaime and the greenstaff for all their hard work, not only in preparing the course for the day but throughout the year.
Thank you also to everyone who bought raffle tickets and generously donated prizes.
The teams were arranged to give members the opportunity to play with people they might not usually meet on the course, and I hope everyone enjoyed the experience. A total of 24 teams battled it out, with the scoring incredibly close. In fact, just four shots separated the top 17 teams. I can already hear the cries of, “If only those lip-outs had dropped!”
The standard of scoring was excellent, although when the wind picked up during the afternoon, club selection became something of a lottery.

Before revealing the winning team, we must mention the shot of the day, a putt that ultimately won the competition.
The winning team reached the par-five 10th green in just two shots and faced a 40-foot eagle putt. Under the Stepaside Scramble format, the player whose shot was selected onto the green was unable to take the first putt. The first player missed, followed by the second, leaving Anna Sutcliffe, who is new to golf, with the chance to hole it. Her putt was arrow-straight but appeared to be running out of steam. With its very last roll, however, the ball dropped into the cup. It was a brilliant moment and proved to be the shot that won the tournament.
1st place, winning a golf bag each:
Ben Childs, David Blackmore, Huw Day and Anna Sutcliffe.

Thank you to Guto in the Pro Shop, who collected the entry fees. He arrived very early in the day and stayed until the bitter end.
A very special thank you to Brian’s wife Gilly, for preparing 96 goodie bags, and to Cathy Griffiths from The DPJ Foundation for organising the raffle, which raised more than £600.
Thank you also to Dan and Brendon for putting on a fantastic barbecue, along with the rest of the catering team for all their hard work throughout the day.
My thanks also go to Belinda and Sue in the office for everything they did behind the scenes.
Finally, the competition simply could not have taken place without the efforts of Linda Tordoff Evans, who arranged the teams, organised the tee times and published the results. Thank you, Linda.
Together, the entry fees and raffle raised more than £1,000 for the charity. Thank you all for your incredible generosity and for making Captain’s Day such a memorable occasion.
