On Monday this week, Tenby GC hosted this year’s renewal of the Centenary Challenge. The competing clubs, Glynhir, Haverfordwest, Carmarthen and Tenby, arrived for a 10am shotgun start to find a thick sea mist hanging over the course, but fortunately the weather improved considerably, and most of the round was played in unseasonably warm conditions.

The better ball matchplay format allows teams to score points for the matches they win, and the final total for each club isn’t known until after the post match meal.

This year, it was a closely run affair, with hosts Tenby GC losing out by just 1 point to trophy holders Haverfordwest GC. Things might have been different, but Mick Seal had to play on his own after a late withdrawal by a Tenby player due to a family emergency.

The curry served after the match was well received by all the players, so thanks to the catering staff for all their efforts. There was also plenty of praise for the greenkeeping team from numerous players, with the quality of the greens receiving a special mention.

Derek Cole, who organised the whole day, kept everything running smoothly, so thanks, Derek, for all your hard work!
