This prestigious event in the calendar has taken many formats over the years but was, this year, run as the Club Championship with cards prepared beforehand. There were starters for the morning and afternoon events, a running scoreboard in the club room, and a grand presentation at the end of a long day.

The oldest trophy is the Regimental Bowl, which stands as a testament to the Club’s enduring military connection. It was presented in 1933 by the 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment, who were then garrisoned at Llanion Barracks in Pembroke Dock. It is the Club’s premiere Net Medal Competition, played as a 36 hole event on the same day as the Cobb Cup.

The Cobb Cup was presented in 1969 by Mrs P. Cobb, her husband having been Captain of the Club from 1952 – 1954. This is a medal trophy to find the Club Champion for each year, and is the most difficult to win.

The 34 entrants played the first 18 holes in beautiful conditions – ideal for golf on a links course. The leaderboard added to the excitement, and our Club President, David Blackmore, having been Starter in the morning then acted as Course Marshall to keep the players moving at a steady pace.

Sandwiches were on order for the quick turn-around, as players were given their cards with afternoon tee times as they handed their morning cards into our Handicap Secretary, Simon Sweet. The early leader on gross scores was Michael Schooling on 74, and on net score Dean Rossiter on 68.

As the afternoon round were out the weather turned. The temperature fell and the wind and rain blew in. After countback on the net scores; in 3rd place was Rhys TG Davies, our DGU
Captain. 2nd place went to Michael Schooling, but beating him by 1 was Roy Edwards.

But then the drama began, as the gross scores of 149 were recorded by both Roy Edwards and Dave Morris and since it was a Championship they were sent out again for a sudden death play off. It was nail-biting for the spectators, but eventually on the 4th extra hole, Roy won.

Prizes were awarded by Captain Heather Morgan, and thanks must go to all those who stayed to celebrate the win, and the people who worked hard to make it a successful event.
