Match Report – Tuesday 3 June
Tenby Seniors welcomed Carmarthen Golf Club to their home course on Tuesday 3 June for what proved to be a competitive and enjoyable fixture. In an unusual turn, Tenby were only able to field six pairs, but this didn’t dampen the spirit or quality of the match.
A strong crosswind challenged players throughout the round, making club selection tricky and adding an extra layer of difficulty.
With Captain Ross James forced to withdraw at the last minute, Brian Jones stepped in and partnered Stan Hudson in the opening match. Hudson was in superb form and the pair secured a confident 4&3 win. The visitors hit back in the second match, with Simon Gumbley and Chas Harrison falling to a 3&1 defeat.
Momentum swung again as Barry Neale and Tony Andres clinched a 3&2 victory, which was followed up by John Ball and Gareth Thomas winning 2&1.
Carmarthen weren’t done yet, however, and responded through Jeff Harries and Peter Taylor, who overcame Allan Watts and Des Stone to narrow the margin.
With the overall match result hanging in the balance, Tenby’s veteran duo of John Hancock and Steve Descosimo held their nerve to secure a decisive 2&1 win, handing Tenby the overall victory.
Both captains praised the excellent condition of the course and the quality of the post-match two-course meal. Wyn Jones of Carmarthen graciously vowed to seek revenge in the return leg.
