On Saturday 5 July, Tenby’s Alison Daniel and Brian Jones faced off against Heather Bird and Peter Grace of Cotrell Park in the second round of the British Mixed Pairs Matchplay.
The visiting pair made an early impact, going 1 up on the 2nd hole with a solid par. Their momentum continued at the 5th when Peter Grace produced a remarkable second shot from the 13th fairway to within 10 feet of the pin, sinking the putt for a superb birdie three.
Undeterred, Brian Jones responded by narrowing the gap on the 7th, and the Tenby duo drew level by the 10th. The match remained tightly contested and all square as they approached the 17th tee, with tension mounting.
Both Cotrell Park players pulled their tee shots on the penultimate hole, failing to find the green. Jones calmly holed a four-foot putt for par, giving Tenby the lead going up the last.
Needing only a half on the 18th to clinch victory, Alison Daniel delivered under pressure, playing the final hole with precision. Her composed birdie four secured the win and a well-earned place in Round 3.
Thanks go to Heather and Peter for a competitive and sporting match.
