Last Monday, in glorious sunshine, 30 seniors travelled to Cardiff to grace the undulating fairways and fast green of Radyr GC. Having polished off the customary bacon sandwich and coffee/tea all the players attempting to win a return four ball, by holing a 20 feet putt on the practice green, no one is returning to Radyr!

The main competition was a betterball Stableford. Scoring was difficult as tee shots disappeared to the bottom of the innocuous looking rough, usually to be hacked a short distance onto the fairway. The greens had a light covering of top dressing, which gave the impression they were slow, but as one player said ‘ when I didn’t 3 putt, I 4 putted’.

The scores were mainly in the low 30s but a few teams did play to their handicaps or better. The day was rounded off with a delicious curry and the odd alcoholic beverage just to restore the fluids lost in the day.

Congratulations to Captain Mick Seal for organising a fantastic day and to all those players who took part. Radyr proved to be great hosts and if you haven’t played the course it’s well worth a trip as we do have a reciprocal agreement with them.

The prize winners were:

Winners: Gareth Thomas and Paul Crawford 40 points

Runners up: Derek Cole and Ian Duke 37 points (20 back 9)

Third place:  Paul Bradley and Stan Hudson 37 points (19 back 9)

Nearest the pin: Phil Carpenter

The only 2 was from Paul Crawford who then generously donated £20 to the Captain’s Charity.
